You can also access the File menu at the top of the view and select Save and Checkpoint. So, if youre editing a cell, the key presses to change the cell to a markdown cell are Esc, M, Enter. For inserting new cells you can either use the insert menu or you can also use the keyboard shortcuts discussed here. Press M whilst in command mode (highlight around the selected cell should be blue, not green), use Esc to switch to command mode and Enter to switch back to edit mode.
